For much of my life I've been pulled by the freedom of travel, living with very little, needing only basic necessities, going where my mind takes me each day, and living simply with very few belongings and possessions. The older I've go
t the more I've wanted to continue these journeys and fulfill my life's wish to circumnavigate the globe single handedly by motorcycle, to see strange and unusual places, meet new people and expand my understanding of myself and my experience of the world. Also for most of my life, certainly since my early twenties I've battled with a not so common form of mental illness called bipolar disorder,
or what used to be called Manic Depression. In essence, my mood levels are not as stable as Joe bloggs. It can be quite a tricky illness for anyone that suffers from it, however I've been fortunate enough to have a fairly mild form, but I know of others who have not been so lucky. Over the last year I've been working to understand my condition better in a therapeutic community in Scotland called Lothorien. Lothlorien is run by the Charity The Rokpa Trust and aims to help people who have suffered trauma or mental illness. Its been an incredibly challenging and cathartic process and one I feel extremely lucky to have experienced. And that said now that I'm leaving I'd like to give something back and so I'll be riding round the world for Lothlorien as my charity alongside Napac another charity close to my heart, who work to bring awareness and support to sufferers of childhood abuse. So here I am with a web site and a trip ahead of me, with no idea of what it will bring for me, physically, mentally or spiritually. I feel a lucky and blessed to have this opportunity ahead of me.
My Objectives
First and foremos
t my main objective is to get round the globe form Scotland to Alaska in one piece and be as open to new experience as much as I possibly can. I'd also like to raise as much cash as possible for both of my charities and bring awareness of them to the general public. I'm expecting to take a year to complete this trip, though I'm not planning to put any time scale on my journey as I think there's enough dashing for deadlines in the world as it is without applying that to my own own experience. So, a year give or take two. As I mentioned earlier I'll be trying to catch boats rather than planes wherever I can. For two reasons really, firstly I'm aware of the environmental impact of travel and if I can reduce my footprint in a small way I will. Secondly I think it'll be fun trying to organise and travel on boats, if I can work a passage I'll try that first. Finally, Im hoping to stop at a few Wwoof farms and interesting projects on the way to give a helping hand and meet a few folk to break up the journey and learn some new skills. I'd also like to attempt to write some sort of book about my travels, learn a bit more guitar and try my arm at a bit of Kite Surfing. Hopefully I'll pick up a bit of Spanish in South America too.
